RALEIGH, North Carolina -- Three men suspected of selling anti-tank explosives to a Raleigh metal recycling company appeared in federal court Thursday on charges that they are in the country illegally.
It remains unclear whether the explosives came from Fort Bragg, but a source close to the case said the men told investigators they had sneaked onto the military reservation and gathered live and spent ordnance to sell as scrap metal.
One of the men, Salvador Gomez-Urieta, waived his right to a detention hearing. Hearings for the other two men were postponed to Monday.
All three men have been incarcerated since Feb. 13, when a federal investigation into an explosion at Raleigh Metal Works led investigators to a home outside Broadway in Harnett County. Investigators found Salvador Gomez-Urieta, his brother Javier Gomez-Urieta, and Adrian Nunez-Aviles at the home. They also found spent rounds of anti-tank munitions there.
