Lawmaker drafts immigration pledge

Sen. John McCain can prove he really has had a change of heart on border security by signing a 15-point pledge to enforce immigration laws, fellow Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions said yesterday.

Mr. Sessions, of Alabama, helped sink the bill Mr. McCain, Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and President Bush tried to pass last year. He has since drafted a checklist he says voters should demand Mr. McCain and the rest of the presidential candidates sign.

“This would give him an opportunity to demonstrate some of the things he's prepared to do,” Mr. Sessions said in remarks at the Heritage Foundation. “It would given him an opportunity to say what he means by his change of heart.”
