Homeland Security officials have reached an agreement with the state of Illinois to temporarily allow employers there to use electronic confirmation to determine the legal status of their workers.
The Illinois state legislature had passed a law — to take effect Jan. 1 — prohibiting employers from enrolling in the federal government's E-Verify program.
In September, the federal government challenged the statute in court, and the state agreed Thursday to suspend the law pending negotiations.
