Researchers in two genetics studies funded by the Veterans Affairs Department broke federal rules by crossing the U.S. border to pay subjects in Mexico for blood samples, government inspectors say.
A researcher in the New Mexico VA Health Care System project said he and two co-workers went to Juarez, Mexico, where they tested about 20 subjects in a study that paid each participant $125 for two blood samples and an interview, inspectors found.
In a second study where at least nine blood samples were traced to Mexico, inspectors found a travel invoice "for taking the government car into Juarez ... to see a subject for the Latino Genetics study."
