NORTH SALEM (Westchester County), New York -- An illegal immigrant arrested by state police this week, accused of failing to register as a sex offender, is free after posting $10,000 bail in Town Court.
Town Justice John J. Johnston Jr., who set Jose M. Broudwiack's bail, declined to comment yesterday on his decision.
Broudwiack, 48, of 2 Sugar Hill Road in the Purdys section of town, is a previously deported felon from California who re-entered the country illegally, state police said.
He moved to Sugar Hill Road about two years ago but failed to register as a sex offender with police, as required by law, police said. Investigator Cornelius Merritt of the Somers barracks charged him Wednesday with failing to register, a misdemeanor.
Police said Broudwiack was convicted in 1999 in Los Angeles County of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14. He served a brief stint in prison, was made to register as a sex offender in California and ultimately deported to his native Peru in May 2000. He re-entered the country illegally in the past few years, police said.
