LOUDOUN County, Virginia -- The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office has charged a Leesburg man with reckless driving in today's fatal crash on Gum Spring Road near the Prince William County line.
According to the sheriff's office, a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck, driven by Carlos Armando Albarenga-Escobar, 21, of Leesburg, was traveling north on Gum Spring Road near Sweetwater Lane when the vehicle apparently went over the double yellow line. A 1994 tractor-trailer, traveling south on Gum Spring Road, struck the pick-up in a near head-on collision around 12:10 p.m. The roadway was closed for nearly six hours due to the severity of the crash and a small fuel leak.
A passenger in the pickup, Jeremia Reyes Diaz, 22, of Leesburg, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Albarenga-Escobar was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was treated at the scene but later transported to the Inova's Cornwall Campus in Leesburg.
Albarenga-Escobar was charged with reckless driving and driving without a license. He is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement will be issued, according to the sheriff's office.
