VIRGINIA -- A task force studying immigration law in Virginia voted Tuesday to recommend giving state and local law enforcement authorities more power to detain and deport illegal aliens.
The panel, which is part of the Virginia State Crime Commission, proposed allowing state and local police officers to arrest individuals they suspect are in the country illegally. Officers would have to undergo federal training first and would need probable cause to suspect a person is illegal before checking his residency status.
