MONROE County, New York -- Monroe County lawmakers Tuesday passed a bill that puts the county on a collision course with a new state policy that will no longer requires Social Security numbers to obtain a driver's license.
By a 20-9 vote, the legislature ordered the County Clerk's Office to continue requiring Social Security identification in issuing driver's licenses.
Legislator David Malta, the Webster Republican sponsoring the bill, called Gov. Eliot Spitzer's change of policy "wrong in many ways."
He said the governor's policy "removes important safeguards," making it easier for illegal immigrants to get a driver's license.
Three Democrats voted with the Republican majority.
County Clerk Cheryl Dinolfo said that when Spitizer's policy is implemented in late November or early December, the county will continue to require Social Security identification.
