D.C. spars with Prince William County, VIRGINIA; drafts resolution critical of illegal immigration crackdown

Washington, D.C. -- The simmering dispute over illegal immigration boiled over into a bitter verbal battle between local leaders squarely on opposite sides of the issue Friday. Prince William County Chairman Corey Stewart criticized the District for doing nothing to address the problem of illegal immigration, while D.C. City Council Member David Catania accused the county of exploiting anti-immigrant sentiment for political gain. "They believe they don't have illegal immigration problems and they're putting their heads in the sand and ignoring the reality," Stewart said.

Prince William County's plan to expand its local police enforcement of illegal immigrants spurred a D.C. City Council resolution this week supporting its immigrant population and criticizing area governments for proposing crackdowns on residents.
