MARICOPA County, Arizona -- In a move he admits is controversial, Sheriff Joe Arpaio unveiled several moving billboards advertising his office’s illegal immigration hot line.
“So it’s controversial I’m the elected Sheriff. I’m not the Chief of Police that has to worry about the Mayor and the City Council," Arpaio said. "I report to the people. I’m doing what the people want me to do.”
The hot line was launched in July.
It is a way for people to call in tips and information about people living and working in Maricopa County illegally.
Since July, the Sheriff’s Office says they have received 2,000 calls and made more than 75 arrests because of the calls.
Two 24-foot trucks, two 28-foot trucks, and eight inmate passenger vans have been plastered with the hot line number and sign that reads, “Do not illegally enter”.
