WICHITA, Kansas -- A federal prosecutor said Wednesday that Eduviges del Carmen Zamora drove illegal immigrants from as far away as California to Wichita, selling them fake American Indian tribal memberships with the false promise of a shortcut to U.S. citizenship.
Lawyers for Carmen Zamora, 44, and her husband, Angel O. Zamora, 38, said their clients were themselves victims of a so-called scam that is part of a multistate investigation.
This was the first public hearing in the continuing investigation into whether a Wichita-based tribe sold memberships to illegal immigrants under the promise that it would keep them from being deported.
