LAKEWOOD, New Jersey -- Deputy Mayor Meir Lichtenstein warned the Township Committee that the township risks losing some of its downtown retail stores, as some owners have threatened to leave if the area is not cleaned up and made safe.

"There are complaints from the store owners again that they are mopping up urine from their driveways, that they're picking up coffee cups, and that women are getting heckled," Lichtenstein said at Thursday's Township Committee meeting. "I don't understand why our downtown has to look the way it looks."

Committeeman Charles Cunliffe suggested that Lakewood may need to adopt a stiffer ordinance that gives police the power to arrest offenders.
