CALIFORNIA, Maryland -- Police say the driver who caused a three-car crash at 2:15 p.m. Sunday on Rt. 4 attempted to flee the scene after crawling out of the vehicle he was driving.
An off-duty D.C. officer on the scene told local investigating police he heard the driver say something in Spanish after exiting the vehicle and then take off running. The officer caught the man and detained him until police arrived.
The crash seriously hurt one citizen, who was flown by Maryland State Police Trooper 7 to Prince George’s trauma center.
The driver, a 31-year-old who presented a Mexican license to police and admitted to being in the country illegally, was given field sobriety tests the scene, and later given further tests at St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Patrol Commander Lt. Dan Alioto told The Bay Net.
As of 3 p.m. Monday no charges have been filed against the driver, though he is facing many charges.
