LOUISIANA: Suspected Illegal Aliens Arrested in Chalmette Armed Robbery

The Times-Picayune

LOUISIANA -- St. Bernard Parish authorities arrested two men Wednesday night in an armed robbery at a Chalmette gas station.

At 10:15 p.m., a man entered the Murphy Oil station at 8101 W. Judge Perez Drive and pulled out a knife while demanding money from the 25-year-old cashier, said Maj. John Doran of the Sheriff's Office.

After the woman opened the register, the man took the cash drawer and ran outside, driving away in a white Nissan Maxima, Doran said.

A short while later, a deputy spotted a car matching that description parked in the 3700 block of Jupiter Drive.

The deputy detained two men sitting in the back seat with a cash drawer and arrested them after the employee was summoned and identified one of them as the robber, authorities said.

Marvin Varela, 26, whose address was unavailable, was booked with armed robbery. The other man, who has not been identified, was booked with possession of stolen property valued at less than $100.

Doran said both men are suspected illegal immigrants from Mexico.
