MCALLEN, Texas -- A Valley woman comes forward saying she too witnessed a human smuggling operation uncovered by Newschannel 5, and that has her concerned.
The woman did not want to be identified, but she tells us about a year ago she saw firsthand the hole in homeland security at a Valley border.
She tells us her and her mother where in line at the Hidalgo bridge, and it was not long before she saw illegal immigrants being sneaked in through a hole in the fence. The woman tells us she even told a customs agent, and he reportedly told her not to worry that border patrol would catch them.
That was not the answer she wanted to hear and it was an answer that left her worried. She tells us she wonders what could happen if the wrong people got into the country or worse if they tried to do something to the bridge, and says she hopes something is done to fix it.
Customs officers contacted Newschannel 5 and they tell us something is being done. They tell us repairs to the fence are in the works, but admit it's an on-going problem that requires a lot of attention.
Customs says they encouraged the public to come forward with any tips they may have to keep our borders safe.
