LINCOLN County, North Carolina -- A second county in the Charlotte region is moving to cut funding for government services used by illegal immigrants.
By a unanimous vote Monday, Lincoln County commissioners directed officials "to cease and desist" funding for local services and reduce money spent on non-mandated federal and state programs used by illegal residents.
Lincoln also will stop contracting with companies that hire illegal residents, the resolution states. In addition, the all-Republican board of commissioners directed the sheriff's office to check the immigration status of people who are arrested and to work with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to deport illegal residents.
Sheriff Tim Daugherty said he is applying for an ICE program that trains selected deputies and provides access to ICE databases, allowing them to check the immigration status of jail inmates.
