PORT HURON, Michigan -- A Mexican man who officials said was transporting nine illegal immigrants was arrested Monday after he was caught trying to cross into Canada via the Blue Water Bridge.

Border patrol agents from Port Huron arrested the man, Adan Salcedo-Cardona, and his passengers about 3:45 p.m. The agents were assisted by officials from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Canadian border officers.

Salcedo-Cardona was charged Tuesday with smuggling. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each person he tried to smuggle.

Salcedo-Cardona told the officers he had been paid $1,200 to smuggle people from Phoenix to a location in New York state. There were nine people in his car - seven from Mexico and two from Honduras - when he was arrested.

Salcedo-Cardona said he had dropped off two people in Illinois and one in Michigan before arriving in Port Huron, said Kurstan Rosberg, supervisory border patrol agent with the U.S. Border Patrol in Detroit.
