TENNESSEE -- A joint investigation between the Maury County Sheriff's Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took a strange turn Tuesday morning .
Their intention was to detain a 14-year-old illegal immigrant and his family, but the arrest led to several others.
Sheriff's deputies had their eye on the family living on Johnston Road in Columbia after the teen brought a gun to Witthorne Middle School in January.
Maury Co. Sheriff’s Dept. Capt. Nathan Johns said gun incident prompted the sheriff’s department to do a joint investigation.
He said, “During that...investigation, we discovered that he and some of his family members was in the country illegally.”
At about 6 a.m. Tuesday, Maury County sheriff's deputies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE agents went to detain the family, but by the time they were done, had 24 undocumented immigrants in custody.
