SHELBYVILLE, Kentucky -- A group of migrant workers stood outside of Centro Latino Wednesday morning, waiting for would-be employers to stop by and offer jobs. It's a familiar scene in Shelbyville, a town that over the past few years has experienced its share of growing pains, as outsiders from surrounding counties and beyond move in.
City leaders say some of those difficulties, including a portion of the city's crime, stem from a very specific portion of the town's new residents -- the illegal immigrant population.
Locally, the discussion has heated up again, and the city council is currently looking into a program that would allow local police to receive training from the U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement agency, effectively making them ICE agents.
