Montgomery County, MARYLAND: Aren’t elected officials the voice of the people? (H.P. Schwarz, The writer is with the Montgomery County Police Department, 6th District Patrol)

MONTGOMERY County, Maryland -- I find it hard to believe that the issue regarding the enforcement of immigration law is such a hot topic. It is not debated that these people are here illegally, yet what constantly gets overlooked is that a large population of those illegals are responsible for other crimes that simply go unaccounted for.

It is ridiculous to know that our taxes help not only to assist them to continue to live here illegally, but even more ridiculous is that the left expects law enforcement to ignore them, and also to watch over them in an overtime program once again funded by our hard-earned tax dollars.

This is just another example of the people being the furthest removed from the situation, making the decisions for the rest of us. I thought that elected officials are expected to echo the voice of the people that they represent.

The question as to whether local law enforcement actively pursues these illegals is consistently taken out of context. There is no program that I am aware of where any local agency actively enforces immigration law as a primary function. When illegal immigrants are taken into custody here, it is usually because of (1) existing warrants through INS⁄ICE, or (2) through their perpetration of other crimes.

My stance is not unsympathetic to the plight of foreign nationals and their daily struggles to survive. It is simply one of safety and of national survival. Do I want my child growing up in a society where the thought of safety and security is a thing of the past?

It is comforting to know that not only does it appear that there is nothing that we can do about this, but that the ones who are the least affected by it and that are making all the decisions, just couldn’t care less.

Local law enforcement knows exactly what is going on in the communites they protect. Homeland Security, ICE should step off and let these Police officers enforce the law. ICE should just pick up the phone when they call.
