Phoenix, ARIZONA: Travel agencies charged in illegal alien smuggling case

PHOENIX, Arizona -- Six Phoenix-area travel agencies have been indicted on state charges of smuggling more than 6,800 illegal immigrants into the U.S. via in a route ran through drop houses in Phoenix to Las Vegas McCarren International Airport.

Sixteen individuals -- including 14 travel agency owners and employees -- were indicted for violating state human smuggling, racketeering, money laundering and conspiracy laws, said state Attorney General Terry Goddard in a Thursday announcement.

Goddard's office said the travel agencies indicted for smuggling illegals were Acapulco Travel, Apricus Travel, Marina Tours, Mundo Travel, Planet Travel and Toronto's Travel.

The Phoenix Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety and airlines coordinated on the investigation.
