HARRISONBURG, Virginia -- A native of El Salvador was convicted on two federal drug charges Thursday that could lead to a decades-long prison sentence.
Jurors took about two hours Thursday night to deliberate the fate of Juan Evangelista Castro, 28, whose trial began earlier in the afternoon in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg. Castro, whose attorney said he was in the United States on a work permit, was arrested in June after the RUSH Drug Task Force raided his apartment and found 6 pounds of methamphetamine in his closet.
Castro was found guilty on one count of conspiracy to sell 500 or more grams of meth — which carries a prison sentence of 10 years to life on conviction — and one count of possession with intent to distribute the same quantity.
