Mobile, Alabama -- A Houston man who was arrested in January on Interstate 10 with a van filled with undocumented workers pleaded guilty this morning to unlawful transportation of an illegal alien.
Santiago Ramirez-Godoy, a Mexican man who is a legal U.S. resident, admitted in Mobile's federal court that he knew the workers he was driving from Texas to Florida were in the country illegally.
Chief U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade accepted Ramirez-Godoy's plea and scheduled his sentencing for June. Under the plea bargain, prosecutors have agreed to recommend he serve the minimum under advisory sentencing guidelines, which defense lawyer Clark Stankoski said he believes will be about 15 months.
