NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia -- More than 150 people crowded into a conference room at the Newport News Marriott at City Center Friday evening to meet and talk to U.S. Sen. John Warner, R-Va., during a fundraiser for local Republicans.

Of the few questions that Warner fielded from the audience, most centered on dealing with illegal immigration.
"This nation of ours has failed, failed miserably, to enforce the laws that are on the books now," Warner said, noting that nine to 12 million illegal immigrants are probably in the country.
He praised President Bush's efforts to address the issue and said illegal immigrants should "bear the burden of being here" by paying for services.
"There is no way we can physically, legally or otherwise round them all up and march them back to where they came from," he said.
