Nashville, Tennessee -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has signed off on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will govern the Davidson County Sheriff’s now soon-to-be-implemented 287(g) immigration enforcement program, Sheriff Daron Hall’s office said Tuesday afternoon.
The federal approval of the contract — which still has to be formally agreed to by the Metro Council — means the Department of Homeland Security and the Metro Legal Department have agreed to language granting the Sheriff’s Office the authority and equipment necessary to perform thousands of instant immigration checks on every person booked into the Metro Nashville jail.
Hall is scheduled to depart for Washington, D.C. this morning to meet Wednesday afternoon with DHS Assistant Secretary of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Julie Myers in the office of U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander. Sen. Bob Corker and Reps. Jim Cooper and Marsha Blackburn are also scheduled to attend the meeting.
