Raleigh, North Carolina -- Two dozen employees at UNC Hospitals were using Social Security numbers that were invalid or assigned to someone else, according to a review released Monday by the state auditor's office.
The report found that seven workers were using nonexistent Social Security numbers, four were using real numbers assigned to dead people and 13 were using real numbers assigned to other living people.
Two of the invalid numbers were the result of errors made when the employees' information was entered into the hospital's payroll system, the report found.
Five involved misunderstandings, temporary numbers or other non-illegal circumstances, while 17 invalid numbers were "deceptive mismatches," hospital spokesman Lynn Wooten said.
Nine of those people have quit and the other eight were fired, Wooten said.
