Nashville, Tennessee -- All but three of the 13 individuals indicted last week as part of a major federal gang bust of the dangerous MS-13 gang in Nashville had been arrested previously by Metro Police for violent offenses not included in the federal indictment.
In addition, the Immigration and Naturalization Service had identified six of the 13 individuals as illegal aliens, placing immigration holds on those six after their most recent arrests, local law enforcement officials said.
But in at least two of those six cases, federal authorities missed opportunities to identify, hold and deport illegal aliens who were arrested, convicted and sentenced to violent crimes but who were later able to engage in further violence as MS-13 members in Nashville, according to a detailed review of Metro Police, court and jail records.
