Rockingham, VIRGINIA: Check-Cashing Scam Strikes Stores

Virginia -- Two Rockingham County businesses have been taken for hundreds by a check-cashing scam similar to one that hit other area banks and businesses in the past.

Last week, Bob Mullin, owner of Mac’s Superette in Fulks Run, learned he was out $944 after two paychecks bounced. They were checks he cashed for men he thought were poultry plant workers.

In March, four men pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Roanoke in connection with a scam that passed $45,000 worth of bad paychecks at Rockingham Heritage Bank in September 2004, according to federal officials.

Attorneys in the case said schemers recruited illegal aliens in Los Angeles and brought them to Virginia to defraud businesses. While law enforcement broke up that crime ring, others could be copying the scheme, said a defense attorney in the case.
