A uniformed border-control force is to be introduced at ports and airports for the first time in the UK, Home Secretary John Reid is to announce.
The budget for immigration enforcement will also double to £280m by the end of 2010, Home Office sources told the BBC.
Action against illegal immigrants must be "more forceful, more effective", Mr Reid has told GMTV's Sunday programme.
