Collins County, TEXAS: Taxpayers would be forced to fund non-profits for illegal alien healthcare

Texas -- Collin County taxpayers may eventually pay $500,000 per year to provide support to non-profits that provide health care to the county’s poor.

The county’s general fund, to which property-tax revenue is deposited, has not been used to pay for indigent health-care needs since 1983. Since then, the county has funded indigent health care from proceeds from the Collin County Foundation’s $17 million fund, which was created by selling Collin County Memorial Hospital. The foundation’s proceeds have paid for indigent care and the county’s 37-member health care department.

A task force that has been studying the issue suggests that county officials could study supplementing the foundation from the general fund. The Collin County Task Force on Indigent Health Care ‘s draft report states that long-range indigent health-care needs will require a partnership with non-profits. Currently, non-profits are serving 15,000 self-paid visits by uninsured illegal aliens, poor residents, the task force found.
