BOSTON, Massachusetts -- House lawmakers shot down a divisive bill to allow children of illegal immigrants to qualify for in-state tuition rates at state colleges yesterday after griping about Washington’s failure to clarify federal immigration laws.
The 96-57 House vote crushed advocates who predicted a majority vote and aimed to get two-thirds support to override a promised veto from Gov. Mitt Romney.
