EAST HANOVER, New Jersey -- Residents at a town hall meeting with Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen on Saturday said illegal immigration is the issue that concerns them the most.
"When is the federal government going to do something proactive about the illegal immigration problem in this country?" asked Frank Summer.
That issue drew the most queries from the 40 residents who came to the meeting. Frelinghuysen, R-Harding, periodically holds such forums in various towns to find out what's on people's minds.
"There's a difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration,"Frelinghuysen said. "We are a nation of immigrants. But if you look at who does the hard labor, who cuts the grass, washes the cars and dishes, many people in Congress raise the issue, why aren't Americans getting these jobs?
He referred to President Bush's friendly relationship with Mexican president Vincente Fox, and an amnesty program that Bush has proposed.
