PHOENIX, Arizona -- Republican former prosecutor Bill Montgomery on Tuesday announced his candidacy for state attorney general in 2006, pledging to step up efforts to combat crime related to illegal immigration and accusing Democratic incumbent Terry Goddard of doing a poor job.
"To put it bluntly, our state is under siege and Arizonans are paying the price for the utter failure of our government to do anything substantial to address it," Montgomery said.
He said he would target human and drug smuggling and border- and immigration-related crimes such as vehicle theft.
Montgomery joins Don Goldwater, an announced Republican candidate for governor, in focusing much of his campaign's initial emphasis on illegal immigration.
