A taxpayer-supported labor shelter raises questions for one community
HERNDON, Va. - Many of the nation’s 10 million undocumented immigrants begin each morning hunting for a day’s pay.
Nari Vargus, from Honduras, is one of dozens of men who gather at a convenience store parking lot in Herdon, Virginia. Men swarm at offers of work from local contractors and homeowners.
But residents in the area complain that the men are a public nuisance. So in answer to growing pressure, the Herndon Town Council this month voted to help pay for a day labor center and shelter, to get the men off the streets.
