Immigrant prosecutions up

McALLEN — The number of immigration prosecutions in the Southern District of Texas increased nearly fivefold last year, far outpacing increases in other border districts and in the nation as a whole, according to a recent study.

Nationwide, the Department of Homeland Security recommended the prosecution of 65 percent more immigration cases in 2004 than it did in the previous year, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University reported.

The clearinghouse’s co-director, Susan Long, said her center provides the U.S. public with comprehensive information about federal staffing, spending and enforcement activities with the hope that it will inform public policy debate. The organization offered no explanation for the increase in immigration prosecutions in Texas’ southern district, where the number jumped from 3,622 in 2003, to 17,897 in 2004.
