BURLINGTON — Local and federal authorities arrested three Brazilian men on Tuesday on charges they schemed to obtain North Carolina driver’s licenses using fraudulent documents.
All three men were illegal immigrants living in the Boston area, according to the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department. Two men were involved in driving immigrants to the state, while a third was a “customer” who paid $1,600 for paperwork and transportation to the state.
The arrests come one month after publication of a report that criticizes North Carolina’s driver licensing system, which was found to be ripe for fraud because of lax laws, inadequate equipment and understaffed offices.
Though the report from the Office of the State Auditor does not directly mention illegal immigrants, it identifies a variety of legal loopholes that make the state ideal for license seekers in the country illegally.
