U.S. looks at Mexican border security

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has conceded the U.S. government's southern border control efforts must be significantly strengthened.

Speaking to reporters, Chertoff said his staff was mapping every mile of the Mexican border and preparing estimates of how many illegal immigrants use each of the various entry corridors so he can best decide how to deploy some 1,000 new Border Patrol agents Congress appears likely to provide for the coming year.
