Rogers: Congress must secure U.S. borders

Deep in the heart of Nogales, Ariz., Congressman Mike Rogers couldn’t escape the stench.

It wasn’t necessarily the city’s cavernous sewer system, where the U.S. representative from Alabama’s 3rd District inspected, it was the ease in which illegal immigrants from Mexico are crossing beneath this border town into the United States.

“The city of Nogales is in a valley,” he said. “When they’re not having seasonal flooding, the smugglers are using those tunnels to smuggle people and drugs from one side to the other. It’s putrid down there. Illegals come through to U.S. side, find a drainage grid and start climbing out. They do it every day.

“The only way I could understand the problem is to see it firsthand, stand in the vastness of the desert (or in this case, the sewer) to see the problem.”
