Felony suspects on bond unlikely to show in court

Alabama -- Circumventing the law through a gaping immigration loophole, illegal immigrants freed on bond following felony arrests have no incentive to appear in court, authorities said.

With limited resources hampering enforcement of federal immigration laws, nonviolent, first-time offenders residing unlawfully in the United States are set free.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Department attempts to serve warrants issued by judges for everyone who skips while out on bond.

One recent case involves a Guatemalan man, charged with operating a counterfeit document ring from his Decatur rental home. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent questioned the illegal immigrant and allowed his release on bond.
