DANVILLE, Va. - Just after midnight Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed the Central American Free Trade Agreement by a 217-215 vote.
“I’ve always been against it,” said U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, who was one of 27 Republican congressmen to vote against the plan. “CAFTA is a cousin of NAFTA, which has cost many, many jobs in Southside Virginia.”
Like NAFTA, which involved Canada and Mexico, CAFTA establishes a free-trade agreement between the United States, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
