The federal government is investigating a private security firm that reportedly hired an illegal immigrant -- who had been ordered deported -- as an armed guard to patrol the Houston immigration office, an official said.
The March 3 arrest of Salomon Juarez led to the federal investigation of the Houston-based Superior Protection, a federal official said.
The investigation also includes the role of the Federal Protective Service, the federal agency that contracts the company for security at numerous federal offices here. The agency also is responsible for background checks of those security employees and for the review of Juarez's record at the time he was hired.
"That's what you call irony," Tom Berg, a federal public defender representing Juarez, said about his client protecting the agency that had ordered him deported in 2000.
