San Francisco is a warm and fuzzy city for illegal aliens. It doesn't matter if they're fleeing persecution or if they're seeking a better life or if they want to break into your house. They're all welcome here, no questions asked. And, as with the homeless, if you build a safe haven, they will come. And we have, and they have.
The problem now is that all of America has now become a safe haven. Criminal aliens -- people who are in our country illegally and who commit crimes -- are a growing threat to public safety and national security. And they're threatening our scarce criminal-justice resources.
John Lee Malvo, the 17-year-old partner in crime to sniper John Allen Muhammad, was an illegal alien who jumped ship in Miami from Jamaica. Malvo joined Muhammad on a rampage that will stand as one of the most terrifying American crime sprees in our history. Our relaxed and politically correct immigration system let him stay even after he was later apprehended and interrogated by authorities in Seattle.
Our nation's borders are not much more protected now then they were pre-9/11. Five of the 19 terrorists on that day were illegal aliens, and the majority of the others got their visas through an express visa service provided in Saudi Arabia. Due in part to the fear of America being called a racial profiler, Saudi Arabians and those from other known terrorist states can and do still join flight schools.
What a relief to know we're still politically correct! Politically correct and suicidal, that is. Sen. Dianne Feinstein's student-visa reform bill, which would have offered better scrutiny before admitting foreign students in the wake of 9/11, was beaten back by congressional Democrats. It apparently didn't pass the Demos' politically correct smell test. Maybe that bill will be worth revisiting now that Americans have spoken and put Republicans back in charge of Congress.
Now, after both 9/11 and the sniper terror attacks -- which involved an illegal alien -- it's worth pausing for a moment for a brief reminder of the assorted havoc created by illegal-alien criminals. These criminals enter our country with both impunity and little or no background research: In 1993, Mir Amal Kansi, a Pakistani, killed two CIA employees outside the agency's Langley, Va., headquarters and then fled the country. The same year saw Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, a religious leader, and four co-conspirators indicted and convicted for the first World Trade Center bombing, which killed six and injured thousands. This cabal of illegal aliens had been found with numerous fake passports and bomb-making videos.
