Illegal Alien pick up in sniper investigation is released by INS

A Mexican man - seized mistakenly by Henrico County police in the sniper investigation - will be released from detention and given more than two months to leave the country voluntarily.

Meanwhile, another illegal immigrant, from Guatemala, seized in the sniper probe has been ordered deported.

An immigration judge set bond at $3,000 yesterday for Edgar Rivera García, 24, of Mexico, who has been in a York, Pa., detention center since police turned him over to federal immigration officials Oct. 21.

Police forced García out of his white van that day as he stopped at a pay telephone that allegedly had been used by the sniper minutes earlier. García was cleared of any wrongdoing after hours of questioning but was held for being in the country illegally.

Police also detained Jose Morales, a 35-year-old Guatemalan, as he prepared to call his wife in his home country from another pay phone at West Broad Street and North Parham Road. He, too, was cleared of any wrongdoing in the sniper case but was held for being in the country illegally.
