Judge denies Afghan bail in INS case

BALTIMORE (AP) — An Afghan national being detained on immigration charges while the FBI investigates whether he has any links to terrorism was again denied bail yesterday.

The FBI needs more time to investigate Khoshal Wahid Nasery and five other men who were arrested Sept. 10 in a sparsely furnished apartment. Officers found computers containing information on flight training and airports, said Immigration and Naturalization Service attorney George Maugans.

Identification cards, photos and Arabic literature on Islam and jihad, or holy war, also were found.

Judge Lisa Dornell set an Oct. 7 bail review hearing for Mr. Nasery. The suspect, 24, was previously denied bail on Sept. 16, pending the outcome of the FBI investigation.

Mr. Nasery repeatedly has denied having any connection to terrorism, saying he came to the United States from Canada in December 2000 to work as a cook to support his sick mother.

Mr. Nasery's attorney, Sameer Ashar, said his client isn't a terrorist and is being held illegally. Mr. Nasery only used the computer for e-mail and could neither read nor write Arabic, Mr. Ashar said.
